Parks, Recreation and Leisure Studies Degree

Your work will focus on building and managing the programs and public spaces where communities play, exercise, and connect. Initially, you’ll be hands-on, perhaps coordinating activities at a community center, managing a corporate wellness program, or overseeing trail maintenance in a state park. As you gain experience, you’ll advance to director-level roles. Your day-to-day will shift from running programs to managing multimillion-dollar budgets, securing grants, and developing long-term strategic plans for entire park systems. Some graduates leverage this field experience to teach the next generation as college-level instructors.

While many of these public-facing roles are stable, they aren't experiencing rapid growth. AI is poised to change the administrative side of this work significantly, automating routine tasks like scheduling staff, analyzing facility usage data, and drafting marketing copy. This won’t eliminate your job, but it will change it, freeing you from paperwork to focus on the irreplaceable human elements: strategic leadership, community engagement, and mentoring your team.
